Chapel of Fajã de São João

Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Açores > Calheta > Santo Antão > Fajã de São João

Location

Situated in the picturesque Fajã de São João, in the civil parish of Santo Antão, municipality of Calheta, this hermitage offers a striking geographical setting. Nestled at the base of an imposing cliff that extends through Lourais, its position provides a unique backdrop. The hermitage is situated in a calm and secluded environment, characteristic of the fajãs of São Jorge Island, where the proximity of the sea and the rocky slope create a distinctive landscape, often captured as an iconic image of the island.

Architectural and Aesthetic Features

The Fajã de São João Hermitage stands out for its simple yet robust aesthetic. It features remarkable black basalt stonework, which harmoniously contrasts with the white-painted masonry. The details of the carved stone are visible around the doors and windows, as well as on its bell tower. Inside, the image of Saint John the Baptist presides over the main altar, in a space dominated by white and grey tones, complemented by natural wood elements that enhance the ambiance.

Brief History and Transformations

The history of the Saint John Hermitage is rich and spans several eras. Although the exact date of its construction is debated among historians, pointing to the 16th century or early 17th century (possibly around 1618), it is known that the structure underwent significant interventions over time. An inscription on the main door lintel, indicating the year 1762, likely refers to a reconstruction or restoration after the great earthquake known as "Mandado de Deus," which occurred in 1757. Later, in 1895, the hermitage underwent further restorations, at which time the bell tower was added, a distinctive element that remains to this day. Other important interventions occurred in 1960 and after the 1980 earthquake, reflecting continuous care for the preservation of this heritage.

A Legacy of Faith and Community

More than just a building, the Fajã de São João Hermitage represents a fundamental pillar in the life of the local community throughout the centuries. Its existence dates back to the early years of the fajã's settlement, serving as a center of faith and socialization. Testament to its historical importance is the fact that, at one time, funerals were held in this space and the fajã had its own resident curate. The hermitage is the venue for the annual festivities in honor of Saint John the Baptist, which take place between June 22 and 24, and the feast of Our Lady of Guidance, celebrated on the Sunday closest to September 8. These celebrations not only keep the religious tradition alive but also strengthen community bonds, demonstrating the strong connection between the temple and the inhabitants of the fajã.
