Location

- Located in Largo da Boa Nova, in the historical center of Angra do Heroísmo, on Terceira Island, Azores.

History

- Built in 1584 next to the former Military Hospital.

- It was dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary (Nossa Senhora do Terço).

- Father António Vieira preached here in 1654.

- In 1642, the name "Boa Nova" (Good News) was given to the hermitage due to the Spanish surrender during the Portuguese Restoration War.

Important Events

- Site of fierce fighting during the siege of the castle in the Restoration War.

- Peace conferences between the people of Terceira and the Castilians took place here in 1641.

- Sermon by Father António Vieira in 1654.

Various Uses

- It functioned as a confraternity and housed the first printing press in the Azores.

- Offered Philosophy and Rhetoric classes during the Regency.

- Served as a military depot.

- It is now a Property of Public Interest in the Central Zone of the City of Angra do Heroísmo.

Renovation and Museum

- The former Boa Nova Hospital, adjacent to the hermitage, is being remodeled to become the Baptista de Lima Military History Museum Center.

- The museum will include the military collection of the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, representing national and foreign Armed Forces.

- It is the only Portuguese military museum not linked to the Ministry of Defense.

Heritage Classification

- Classified as a Property of Public Interest.

- Part of the classified set of the Central Zone of the City of Angra do Heroísmo.
