Situated in the parish that shares its name, in the heart of Angra do Heroísmo's historic center, this church is integrated into the city's ancient urban fabric. Its position adapts to the terrain's slope at the confluence of some traditional streets, such as Rua do Cruzeiro. It features a partial churchyard, delimited by a wall with railings, which creates a landscaped space around part of the building, contributing to its setting within the classified historic urban landscape.
The roots of this temple are among the oldest in the city of Angra do Heroísmo. Its history dates back to a primitive hermitage, whose construction is attributed to Álvaro Martins Homem, one of the region's first settlers, between the years 1460 and 1474. This pioneer was also responsible for the construction of the primitive Hermitage of São Salvador, which would later give rise to the current Cathedral. The importance of the site grew, and in 1553 the hermitage was elevated to the status of parish seat.
Viewed from the outside, the church presents an appearance that combines sobriety with harmonious lines, characteristic of local religious architecture throughout the centuries. The main facade stands out for its blue-painted stonework elements contrasting with the white plastered walls. The portal is flanked by pilasters and topped by a pediment. The bell tower, attached to the left side facade, is a singular element, crowned by a pyramidal spire covered with blue and white tiles in a zigzag pattern, topped by a globe and weather vane.
Upon entering, the church's interior reveals a decorative richness that contrasts with its exterior simplicity. The structure is divided into three naves, separated by arches over pillars. The ceilings are wooden, with emphasis on the central nave, which features coffered panels with rosettes. In the high choir, above the entrance, there is an 19th-century pipe organ. The baptistery, to the left, has a stone vault ceiling.
The interior decoration is rich and varied, a result of the numerous interventions the church has undergone over time. The side chapels and the main chapel display remarkable gilded carving, with altarpieces that reflect different Baroque styles. The triumphal arch leading to the main chapel is entirely covered in carving, including the national coat of arms at its keystone. The walls of the main chapel are partially covered by carved paneling, integrating painted panels with biblical and Marian scenes. The old choir stalls in the main chapel and the painted wooden confessionals are other elements of interest that contribute to the historical and artistic atmosphere of the place.
Recognized for its historical and artistic value, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição is classified as a Property of Public Interest. Its importance is further reinforced by its inclusion in the Central Zone of the City of Angra do Heroísmo, which is classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The church underwent significant restoration work after the 1980 earthquake, which caused it damage, allowing for its reopening for worship and enhancing its heritage.
