Situated in Atalhada, an area that integrates the Nossa Senhora do Rosário urbanization, in the municipality of Lagoa, this center is located within a residential and community context. Its position reflects an integration into the daily lives of local inhabitants, offering an authentic perspective on the region's social dynamics.
Founded in September 1997, the Centro Social e Paroquial de Atalhada was born from the initiative to respond to the social and cultural needs of the local population. It operates as a private, non-profit social solidarity institution dedicated to supporting and promoting the well-being of the community. Its creation reflects a continuous effort to strengthen the social fabric of Atalhada and its surroundings, marking its presence as a pillar of support since the late 20th century.
One of the center's most notable aspects is its commitment to preserving and transmitting artisanal knowledge. Within its activities, there is an area dedicated to handicrafts, established in December 1997. This space hosts initiatives aimed at teaching and developing manual work, such as weaving and embroidery, which represent part of the local tradition. By focusing on training and skills development, the center actively contributes to the maintenance of the region's cultural identity, valuing manual art and ancestral techniques.
In addition to handicrafts, the Centro Social e Paroquial de Atalhada promotes other initiatives linked to the solidarity economy and the valorization of skills. In May 1999, areas such as carpentry and the production of traditional pastries were created, integrated into social support projects. These areas aim to provide training and development opportunities, contributing to the qualification of individuals and the preservation of characteristic local techniques and products. Although the focus is on community development, these areas reveal the richness of traditions and the ability to innovate from ancestral know-how.
