The Areias Windmill is located in the Areias area, an area belonging to the locality of Cedros, in the municipality of Horta, on Faial Island. Situated at an altitude ranging between 100 and 110 meters, the windmill is positioned at a point easily accessible by asphalt road. Its elevation gives it a characteristic visibility in the surrounding rural landscape.
This specimen is a wooden rotating windmill, a particular typology classified as Faial type (FAI). Its structure rests on a robust pedestal, built of stone and mortar, whose materials remain exposed. One of the most distinctive elements is its sail, which has always been composed of a wooden-bladed propeller, giving it a peculiar and traditional silhouette.
The Areias Windmill was erected in the mid-20th century, after 1950, and maintained its grain milling activity until at least 1974. Its history is linked to a society, which suggests a model of collective ownership and use, reflecting the socio-economic context of the time. Its presence in the landscape was recorded on cartographic maps from 1969. Currently, the windmill preserves a good state of conservation, testifying to the agricultural heritage and traditional engineering of Faial Island.
