The Ethnographic House is located in Arrochela, an area within the parish of Pedro Miguel, in the municipality of Horta. Situated in the heart of this Faialense locality, its position allows for an immersion into the life and daily routine of the island, in an environment that reflects the community's identity.

An Ethnographic Legacy

The Folklore and Ethnographic Group of Pedro Miguel, founded in 1991, undertook the mission of preserving the region's musical traditions and customs. In this preservation effort, the group dedicated itself to collecting ancient artifacts, pieces that bear witness to the uses and way of life of past generations.

The collection of objects gained significant prominence, especially after the 1998 earthquake, an event that led to the recovery of various pieces from the rubble of homes. These items, with their intrinsic history, found a new purpose within the group's collection, enriching the island's cultural heritage.

The House as Guardian of Memory

The need for a suitable space to house the growing collection led the Folklore and Ethnographic Group to seek a property in the parish of Pedro Miguel. This process began in 2002, aiming to adapt a property to serve as the current Ethnographic House. Its official opening to the public took place on June 21, 2014.

This house constitutes a symbol of dedication to preserving Faialense roots, functioning as a meeting point between the past and the present. It is here that the group's continuous work to keep the local culture alive materializes, offering an authentic glimpse into the ethnographic heritage of Pedro Miguel and Faial Island.
