Casa das Cavalhadas is located in Ribeira Seca, a parish in the municipality of Ribeira Grande. This location, intimately connected to the tradition of the Cavalhadas de São Pedro, offers an authentic perspective on the region's cultural roots.
Casa das Cavalhadas is a space dedicated to safeguarding and promoting a secular tradition: the Cavalhadas de São Pedro. This cultural manifestation, dating back to the 16th century, takes place annually on June 29th, coinciding with the festivities in honor of Saint Peter, patron saint of the parish of Ribeira Seca. Its origin is linked to a vow of gratitude for the preservation of the local church and the image of the patron saint during an episode of volcanic activity at Pico do Sapateiro. Integrated into this ritual of gratitude are the alâmpadas, elaborate bunches decorated with seasonal flowers and fruits, symbolizing the rebirth of the land after periods of adversity.
Inaugurated on June 29, 2021, Casa das Cavalhadas functions as a museum center dedicated to preserving the memory and significance of the Cavalhadas. By exploring this space, visitors can deepen their knowledge about the history of this unique tradition. The exhibition includes the display of costumes worn by the various characters that make up the procession, as well as accoutrements that adorn the horses. Additionally, the space offers the opportunity to listen to oral testimonies and watch videos that illustrate the theme, providing a complete immersion in this significant cultural celebration.
