The Parish Church of Cedros, also known as the Church of Santa Bárbara, stands in the parish of Cedros, municipality of Horta, on the magnificent island of Faial. It is located in the local square, a central point of the community, with the main access via Rua da Igreja (Church Street). This location allows its imposing presence to be observed within the context of the locality's urbanization, offering a glimpse into Azorean daily life.
The history of the Church of Santa Bárbara dates back to the 16th century, establishing itself as one of the oldest religious buildings in Cedros. Historical documents, such as Gaspar Frutuoso's accounts in his work "Saudades da Terra", already described the church in the third quarter of that century, mentioning its original structure with "three naves on five columns". A lasting testament to its foundation is the 1596 inscription, still visible above the south side portal, which marks the construction of the chapel by António Martins, highlighting its deep connection with the early days of the settlement.
Throughout the centuries, the Church of Santa Bárbara has witnessed the transformations and resilience of the community. Its structure, although rooted in the 16th century, integrates elements from different eras, a result of a process of adaptation and renovation. A significant milestone in its recent history was the 1971 fire, which caused extensive damage but did not prevent its recovery. The church was subsequently enlarged, contributing to its current configuration, where the solidity of the past merges with later interventions, maintaining its function as the religious center of the parish.
