The Carmo Chapel is located in the Lugar da Barca, in the locality of Areia Funda, within the municipality of Madalena. It sits adjacent to a public promenade, on a platform paved with traditional cobblestones, where low walls delineate its small forecourt.
From the exterior, it is possible to catch glimpses of the sea, as the chapel rises slightly from the coastline, offering a serene and open perspective to the oceanic landscape.
This chapel, dating back to 1934, reflects the strong devotion to the Sacred Heart of Mary that characterized the era of its construction. Its presence is part of an Azorean religious tradition of building small hermitages near public roads, facilitating access and prayer.
Over the decades, the Carmo Chapel has maintained its deeply communal character, serving as a meeting point for local prayers and celebrations. Even today, the space preserves inscriptions and symbols that recall its foundation and the legacy of faith of its builders.
The facade of the Carmo Chapel is distinguished by its simplicity, with white-painted walls and grey mouldings that accentuate the baroque curves of the upper finish. In the tympanum, the foundation date appears in relief, a testament to its history.
The interior, although modest in size, reveals remarkable care. At the altar, there is a small altarpiece housing niches with sacred images. The atmosphere is enriched by floral arrangements, sometimes including sunflowers, and a ceramic floor that stands out with its warm tones.
In its surroundings, the houses maintain their traditional style, with quiet streets that contribute to a genuinely peaceful atmosphere. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean infuses the air with a subtle maritime aroma, and the gentle breeze invites a tranquil pause, complementing the inherent serenity of this space.
The local environment offers a glimpse into Azorean life, marked by calmness and a strong connection to nature.
