Salga Bay is located on the south coast of Terceira Island, within the locality of Porto Judeu, in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo. This natural cove, situated in the area of Porto Judeu de Baixo, offers a direct view of the ocean, benefiting from a location that allows close contact with the maritime environment.
This place is historically significant for having been the stage of the Battle of Salga, which took place on July 25, 1581. On that day, Portuguese military forces on Terceira Island confronted a landing of Castilian troops. The resistance fought here was crucial, allowing the island to remain independent and loyal to the Portuguese crown for two more years, during a challenging period of national history.
The memory of the Battle of Salga is also indelibly linked to the figure of Brianda Pereira. Near the bay, a monument evokes the courage of this woman who, leading a group of Terceirenses, performed a remarkable feat: the use of a herd of wild bulls to repel the invading army that had already landed. This singular act contributed decisively to the successful defense of the island at that time.
Currently, Salga Bay presents itself as a suitable place for leisure and enjoying the natural landscape. Its configuration includes a natural pool, which invites sea bathing in calm waters, and a small harbor, which complements the maritime vocation of the space. The bay is a point where one can appreciate the coastal surroundings and enjoy moments of tranquility.
