Situated in the city of Horta, on the island of Faial, the Legislative Assembly is located in the Matriz area. Its presence in the urban center of Horta contributes to the city's identity as the political capital of the archipelago, marking the landscape with its institutional structure.
The building that houses the Legislative Assembly was inaugurated in June 1990, standing out for its contemporary lines. With a project signed by architect Manuel Correia Fernandes, the construction was conceived from scratch for the function it performs, reflecting a modern and functional approach. Its exterior features characteristics leaning towards minimalism, giving it a sober and elegant presence in the urban environment.
Inside, the grandeur of the plenary hall is a point of interest, positioned in the center of the building. This space is illuminated by a notable central dome that rises above the structure, being a distinctive architectural element also visible from the exterior of the building.
The Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores represents the heart of the archipelago's political and legislative life. It is the place where laws governing the Autonomous Region are debated and approved, being, alongside the Assembly of Madeira, one of the self-governance institutions provided for by the Portuguese Constitution.
Its installation in this modern building, built specifically for the purpose, symbolizes a phase of affirmation of Azorean autonomy, consolidating Horta as the center of regional legislative power. Visiting this location allows for an understanding of the importance of self-governance for the Azores.
