The Redoubt of the Patrol is located in Porto Pim Bay, an emblematic area of Horta city, on Faial Island. Its strategic position offers a unique setting overlooking the bay, where the tranquility of the waters harmonizes with the city's historical presence. This site is part of Porto Pim's urban surroundings, a unique corner that invites contemplation of the landscape.
Built in the 17th century, the Redoubt of the Patrol was part of a complex fortification system designed to protect Porto Pim Bay, which served as Horta's original port. Its function was essential: to control maritime entry and traffic, ensuring defense against attacks common at the time.
Over the centuries, the military utility of this redoubt evolved. Around 1817, it underwent rehabilitation, and from then on, it began to play a different role, serving as a prison until the end of World War II, which demonstrates its adaptability throughout history.
Currently, the Redoubt of the Patrol is recognized as a historical-cultural landmark in Horta, classified as a Property of Public Interest. It is a place that reflects resilience and the ability to overcome adversity, currently undergoing recovery after sustaining damage caused by Hurricane Lourenzo. Its presence in Porto Pim Bay continues to be a point of interest, inviting contemplation of its past and the surrounding natural environment.
