Located on Monte da Guia, this viewpoint is situated on one of the slopes that make up Faial's volcanic peninsula, in Horta. Its elevated position offers a comprehensive perspective over Horta Bay and part of the urban landscape. Monte da Guia, of volcanic origin, rises as a prominent natural element, serving as a backdrop for the city and its port.
From here, it is possible to contemplate the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean and, on clear days, glimpse the silhouette of Pico Island, with its imposing mountain, and the channel separating the two islands.
The viewpoint is intrinsically linked to the history of the Dabney family, a prominent American family who resided in Faial for over a century, starting from the late 18th century. Acting as United States consuls and important merchants, the Dabneys played a crucial role in the island's economic and social life.
The "summer house" to which the viewpoint refers was their summer residence on Monte da Guia, a place where they enjoyed tranquility and views over the bay. This observation point is a testament to the enduring presence and influence of the Dabneys, reflecting their connection to Horta's landscape and daily life, and is today recognized as a monument of cultural interest.
From the viewpoint, the gaze encompasses a distinct and diverse panorama. The main view focuses on Horta cove, where the movement of vessels and the coastline framing the city unfold. It is a privileged point for observing the interaction between the natural element of the mount and the urban area below, offering a visual understanding of the local geography.
The breadth of the landscape includes the blue of the Atlantic, stretching to the horizon, and the view of the neighboring Pico Island, creating a scenery of natural beauty and great photographic value. The site offers a calm and contemplative perspective on the bay's dynamics and the splendor of the Azorean archipelago.
The viewpoint benefits from its setting on Monte da Guia, an area distinguished by its geology and coastal biodiversity. Although close to Horta, Monte da Guia offers a distinct environment, characterized by its own vegetation and trails that traverse it, providing an experience of contact with the island's volcanic nature.
The presence of the viewpoint on this mount allows visitors to appreciate the natural beauty of the Faialense landscape, while enjoying the view over the bay. It is a place that invites observation of the marine and terrestrial environment, valuing the interconnectedness between human history and the natural richness of the Azores.
