The Horta Naval Radiotelegraph Station is located in the Bairro do Fomento da Habitação, in the city of Horta, on Faial Island. Its position in this residential neighborhood reflects the need for a strategic location for its operations, although it now blends quietly into the urban landscape of the locality.
For decades, this location represented a pivotal point in maritime and military communications. Inaugurated on July 30, 1928, the Horta Naval Radiotelegraph Station served as a vital transmitting and radiotelegraphic post for the Portuguese Navy. Its activity spanned 84 years, ceasing operations in 2012, marking the end of an era in the modernization of naval communications. At its peak, it housed a permanent team of about 86 military personnel, accompanied by their families, highlighting the scale and strategic importance that this station held in the context of Atlantic defense and communication.
The Horta Naval Radiotelegraph Station complex is a notable example of civil architecture, designed to meet the demands of a large-scale communications post. In addition to the buildings specifically dedicated to transmissions, the site also included a series of six apartment blocks, each with three floors. This large-scale construction demonstrates the infrastructure required for the operation of a radiotelegraph station and for housing the numerous personnel who worked there. The presence of this building in Horta is a testament to its historical relevance and the impact it had on the local community.
