Located in the town of Vila Franca do Campo, on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores, the Convent of São Francisco is situated in a more isolated area, at the entrance to the town. Its placement takes advantage of the terrain's slope, offering a unique perspective of the surroundings.
From the convent, particularly its side terraces, one can enjoy extensive views of the ocean and the iconic Islet of Vila Franca do Campo, a volcanic rock formation that stands out in the maritime landscape.
The Convent of São Francisco, also known as the Convent of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, had its initial construction in the late 15th century. The history of the convent was drastically affected by the strong earthquake of 1522, which devastated Vila Franca do Campo and caused considerable damage to the original structure.
Subsequently, the convent was rebuilt, with the support of King D. João III. The church we see today was built in the 18th century, with the space of the original church adapted for other areas, such as the chapter house and the refectory, reflecting the changes and adaptations over the centuries.
This old male Franciscan convent played a significant role in the life of the community and the island throughout the centuries. Beyond its religious function, it stood out as a notable center of education.
Its pedagogical importance was such that it attracted students from all over the island of São Miguel and even from the island of Santa Maria, earning Vila Franca do Campo the nickname "Micaelense Coimbra". Currently, this built complex is recognized as a Property of Public Interest, underlining its undeniable historical and cultural value.
The building has a rectangular plan, composed of the church, with nave and chancel, and the old convent building, to which a bell tower is attached. The facades are mostly plastered and painted white, complemented by a base and decorative elements in local stonework.
Inside, the two-story cloister is the central point. The lower floor is marked by arcades of perfect round arches resting on stone pillars, creating an atmosphere of serenity. In the center of its courtyard, one can observe a fountain with a faceted basin, a detail that adds charm to this historical space.
