Tarouca

Tarouca, located in the heart of the Viseu district, is a municipality that invites the discovery of a rich historical heritage and unique natural landscapes. This territory is distinguished by its strong connection to Cistercian history, a legacy that has profoundly shaped its identity and is notably manifested.

One of its most emblematic landmarks is the Monastery of São João de Tarouca, founded in the 12th century. This remarkable monument is considered one of the first Cistercian monasteries in Portugal and a grandiose testament to medieval monastic architecture. Its impressiveness and the serenity of the place invite contemplation of the past and an understanding of the monastic influence in the region.

Beyond its monastic heritage, Tarouca is part of the Romanesque Route, featuring several churches and bridges that exemplify the beauty and simplicity of Romanesque art. The surrounding landscape is marked by the presence of vineyards, which extend across the hillsides, and by the abundance of apple orchards, symbols of its agricultural vocation and the richness of its soil.

The municipality is also recognized for its wine production, particularly for the Sparkling Wine from the Távora-Varosa Demarcated Region. This drink, of distinct quality, reflects the characteristic climate and soil of the region, being an essential element in local culture and identity.
