The Tricycle Museum is located in Mesão Frio, in an area marked by the Douro landscapes, where the river and terraced hillsides create a unique setting. The building is integrated into a stone construction, with a rustic appearance, combining architectural simplicity with a welcoming atmosphere. Its proximity to the Carrapatelo Bridge gives it a special framing, allowing the visit to be associated with the experience of the Douro landscape.
The space is discreet and tranquil, which reinforces the feeling of traveling back in time upon entering the exhibition. The contrast between the natural surroundings and the museum's interior creates an intimate and curious atmosphere.
The museum was born from the personal passion of Jorge Rodrigues, who from an early age began collecting tricycles and bicycles from various eras and origins. The result is a private collection, inaugurated in 2016, which brings together examples from Europe, North America, and Asia, as well as national pieces. The oldest date back to the 19th century, allowing us to follow the evolution of these objects across different generations.
In total, there are about 65 tricycles and bicycles on display, but the collection is much larger, with over 500 pieces stored in the museum's reserves. The variety ranges from simple wooden models to more elaborate children's vehicles, with decorative details and mechanical solutions that reflect the creativity of each era.
The museum's interior stands out for its intimate atmosphere, with stone walls, soft lighting, and a careful arrangement of the pieces. The space does not only feature tricycles; there are also bicycles, antique toys, and elements that help contextualize how these items were used in daily life. Many of the visits are accompanied by photographic records and short videos that reinforce the historical and personal dimension of the project.
The exhibition evokes memories in adults, who recognize objects similar to those from their childhood, and also attracts younger visitors, who discover a world of toys very different from today's. The result is an experience that connects generations and shows how childhood play and mobility have evolved over time.
The Tricycle Museum is a unique space in Portugal, dedicated exclusively to this type of object. More than a collection, it represents the testimony of personal taste transformed into cultural heritage accessible to the public. Each tricycle on display tells a story, whether through its design or the social and historical context that gave rise to it.
It is an example of how seemingly simple objects can gain new meaning when gathered and preserved, becoming part of the collective memory and a narrative that spans various generations and cultures.
