Cais da Régua (Régua Quay) is located on the right bank of the Douro River, in the city of Peso da Régua, a municipality bearing the same name. Situated in the Olival Basto area, this location offers a direct view of the river waters and the terraced hills covered in vineyards, a characteristic image of the Douro Wine Region. Its central position in the locality makes it a reference point for those visiting the city and seeking contact with the river.
The history of Cais da Régua dates back to the 18th century, a period when it was built to play a vital role in the Port wine trade. For centuries, it was the main embarkation and disembarkation point for wine barrels, transported by the traditional rabelo boats. These boats departed from here, loaded with the region's harvests, navigating down the river to Vila Nova de Gaia. This quay was, therefore, an essential pillar in the local economy and in the dissemination of the famous Douro nectar.
Over time, Cais da Régua has undergone several interventions and improvements, adapting to contemporary needs. Currently, it features a modernized infrastructure, designed for those seeking a direct connection with the Douro. It is a space that invites observation of the river movement and contemplation of the surrounding landscape. Its layout allows visitors a peaceful experience by the river, connecting the present with its rich past.
