Bocage Square stands in the heart of Setúbal's Historic Centre, serving as a central meeting point for those exploring the city on foot. Its historically strategic position by the Sado River has shaped its development over the centuries, giving it a vibrant atmosphere and an intrinsic link to urban life.
This convivial space holds traces of a millennial history. Researchers have revealed that, as early as the 1st century AD, this area hosted a Roman fish-salting factory, active for about two centuries. After its abandonment, its importance would be reborn with the Christian Reconquest, when the churchyard of the then-built Church of São Julião began to define the outline of what would become Largo do Sapal. Over the centuries, the square was redesigned, with the installation of a fountain in the 15th century, supplied by an ancient aqueduct, and successive enlargements that transformed its perimeter, demolishing old constructions to make way for a wider and more central space.
In the center of the square stands the imposing monument in honor of Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage, the celebrated poet born in Setúbal in 1765. Erected in 1871, this tribute was the result of an initiative by Portuguese and Brazilian admirers. The white marble statue, sculpted with mastery, rests on a Corinthian column and an octagonal base. Bocage is depicted with a quill pen in his right hand and sheets of paper in his left, dressed in the fashion of his time. The pedestal displays an inscription praising the poet, complemented by allusive verses that invite reflection on his work. The Portuguese pavement of the square itself, with its intricate designs and, at times, fragments of engraved verses, reinforces the site's connection to its literary patron.
Bocage Square is embraced by a variety of buildings that bear witness to Setúbal's architectural and social evolution. Among them, the grandeur of the Town Hall (Paços do Concelho) stands out, a building with an imposing facade that defines one side of the square. Around it, one observes a mixture of architectural features, from older constructions, some of which were once associated with historical figures or local institutions, to more recently designed buildings. The space includes a contemporary multifunctional structure, designed to provide shade and shelter, and to serve as a stage for small cultural expressions. Elements such as the benches and streetlights that dot the square invite visitors to enjoy a moment of tranquility, observing the city's daily life in this historic heart.
