The Romeira Market is located in the Caramujo area, an integral part of Cova da Piedade, in Almada. It is situated in an urban area that was once distinguished by its industrial dynamism, giving it a setting that reflects the history of a constantly evolving locality.
This space, currently revitalized, was once a prosperous cork production factory. Over time, factory activity ceased in the mid-20th century, and the area was abandoned for several decades. It was only in 2015 that a redevelopment project began, culminating in the opening of the Romeira Market in 2018. What was an old industrial warehouse transformed into the main hall of the building we see today.
The Romeira area, where the market is located, has a rich history linked to the industrial development of Almada in the early 20th century. Beyond its more recent factory past, the site has deeper roots, having once been part of the historic Quinta Real do Alfeite, a property of D. Carlos I that served as a residence for the royal family. The old ponds of Largo da Romeira, fed by springs, were also known for the role they played in local life, serving as a laundry point for the city of Lisbon, a testament to the daily life of bygone times.
The Romeira Market is distinguished by its architecture, which combines contemporary design with the preservation of the memory of its industrial past. The redevelopment maintained traces of the original structure, integrating them into a modern and inviting environment. The space is divided between an interior area, in the old factory hall, and a pleasant outdoor garden. This combination offers visitors a place where they can observe the transition from an industrial legacy to a new purpose, in a setting that invites conviviality and tranquility.
