The statue of D. Paio Peres Correia is located in the historic center of Samora Correia, one of the main towns in the municipality of Benavente. Situated in a wide square paved with Portuguese cobblestones, the sculpture stands in a space for conviviality and passage, surrounded by traditional buildings that maintain the typical architectural style of the Ribatejo village. The place conveys a tranquil atmosphere, with benches and shade from trees that invite contemplation of the work.
The monument was inaugurated on April 10, 2007, as a tribute to D. Paio Peres Correia, a historical figure linked to the foundation and identity of Samora Correia. The work resulted from an initiative by the Civic Movement for the Restoration of the Municipality of Samora Correia (Mais Samora), which promoted a public subscription to perpetuate the memory of the knight and master of the Order of Santiago. The sculpture is by the artist Rui Medeiros.
The statue depicts D. Paio Peres Correia in a firm and vigilant pose, wearing medieval armor and wielding a spear, a symbol of his bravery and military role during the Reconquista. The figure stands on a circular pedestal of light stone, where the name of the village is inscribed, establishing a symbolic link between the past and present of Samora Correia. The combination of the bronze sculpture and the soft tone of the stone creates a harmonious contrast that enhances the grandeur of the piece.
The space surrounding the monument is simple but well-maintained, reflecting the community spirit of the village. The black and white cobblestones highlight the pedestal and give a traditional touch to the ensemble. The urban setting and serene environment make the place conducive to a brief stop to appreciate public art and reflect on the history of Samora Correia and the legacy of its founder.
