The Coruche Meteorological Radar, also known as the Cruz do Leão Radar, is located in the area of the same name, near the locality of Couço, in the municipality of Coruche. Its imposing presence and modern design stand out in the surrounding landscape, marking its position next to the Cruz do Leão geodesic marker. Situated at an elevated level, this building occupies the center of its delimited area, being a visible reference point in the region.

A Technological and Architectural Landmark

This remarkable structure is a cylindrical tower, built entirely of reinforced concrete, approximately 18 meters high up to the antenna platform. Its shaft, with an internal diameter of 5.2 meters, houses five floors above ground and a technical roof, complemented by an underground floor. Its robustness and functional design give it a unique aesthetic, making it an interesting example of engineering architecture in the Ribatejo territory.

The Importance in Weather Forecasting

Since its initial installation in 1998 and, more recently, with a significant technological upgrade in 2023, the Coruche Radar plays a crucial role in observing and forecasting meteorological phenomena in Portugal. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, it allows for precise monitoring of precipitation intensity, wind direction and speed, and classification of different types of events such as rain, hail, or snow. The data collected by this radar are vital not only for daily weather forecasting but also for preventing adverse situations, such as floods or forest fires, contributing to public safety and environmental protection. It is part of a national network of radars that cover a large part of mainland Portuguese territory.
