The Man and Donkey Park is located at the entrance to the village of Couço, in the municipality of Coruche, district of Santarém. Situated next to a small roundabout, it is easily visible to those arriving in the village, integrating into a rural and tranquil setting, with agricultural fields stretching as far as the eye can see and trees offering some shade and coolness to the space. The surrounding area combines the peaceful atmosphere of the village with the open landscape typical of the Ribatejo river plains.
The sculptural ensemble that gives the park its name represents the close relationship between man and donkey, a striking symbol of Portuguese rural life. The figures, in cut metal, show a man and his animal side by side, evoking work, perseverance, and the connection between people and the land. This simple yet expressive representation recalls times when the donkey was a companion in the daily toil of the fields and paths of Couço.
More than just a decorative piece, the monument reflects the collective memory of the community, paying tribute to generations who lived off agricultural effort and the harmonious relationship with working animals.
The space is small, but well-maintained, with areas of light gravel and punctual vegetation that highlight the metal sculptures. The presence of trees and a small central flowerbed contributes to a serene and welcoming atmosphere. It is a place that invites a brief stop, whether to appreciate the art, take a photograph, or simply observe the contrast between the metal of the sculptures and the surrounding greenery.
With its simple and symbolic setting, the Man and Donkey Park is a local reference point, valued both for its aesthetics and for the meaning it carries in the identity of Couço and the region.
