Location

The Church of Chouto is located in the peaceful locality of Chouto, which is part of the union of parishes of Parreira and Chouto, in the municipality of Chamusca. Situated in the heart of Ribatejo, this church is in a predominantly rural setting, offering a serene perspective on the region's community life. Its presence in the center of the village makes it a landmark in the local landscape.

Historical-Ecclesiastical Journey

The history of the Church of Our Lady of Conception of Chouto reflects the administrative and religious evolution of the area. Originally, this parish functioned as a curacy, integrated into the term of Santarém. Throughout the 19th century, its territorial attribution changed, transitioning from the former municipality of Ulme, which would later be extinguished and incorporated into Chamusca. Its district connections also underwent changes, passing through Santarém, Chamusca, and subsequently, Golegã.

Regarding its ecclesiastical hierarchy, the church belonged to the Patriarchate of Lisbon for many years. However, in 1975, with the creation of the Diocese of Santarém, this parish was integrated into this new diocese, to which it still belongs today, forming part of the archpriestship of Almeirim. This journey mirrors the transformations in Portugal's civil and religious organization.

The Heart of the Community

The Church of Chouto, dedicated to Our Lady of Conception, plays a central role in the life of the local community. Beyond being a place of worship, it represents a symbol of faith and deeply rooted traditions in this Ribatejo village. Its secular presence in Chouto testifies to the resilience and cultural identity of the locality, serving as a space for unity and the perpetuation of collective memory. The temple's architecture, typically simple for rural parish churches, underscores its essential purpose of serving the faithful and the daily life of the locality.
