The Church of Teira, also known as the Parish Church of Alcobertas, is situated in an isolated and prominent location in the village of Alcobertas, within the municipality of Rio Maior. It stands in a large churchyard, paved with traditional Portuguese cobblestones, which surrounds and highlights it in the village's urban landscape. This outdoor space, punctuated by large trees, offers an atmosphere of tranquility and invites contemplation of the building and its surroundings.
What makes the Church of Teira truly unique is its multifaceted origin and the fusion of eras. The current building incorporates a megalithic dolmen, a prehistoric funerary monument with a chamber and corridor, dating back to the Neolithic period. This ancient structure was integrated into the church, transforming into a side chapel and conferring a rare historical depth to the site, where Christian faith superseded millenary rituals, preserving an exceptional archaeological legacy.
The church, in its current form, reveals layers of construction and modifications over the centuries. Its main facade, plastered and painted white, features a notable portal topped by a large window and a niche that once housed a fifteenth-century image. Inside, the single nave has a wooden choir loft and walls lined with seventeenth-century polychrome tiles, displaying geometric patterns. Fifteenth-century holy water fonts and baptismal fonts can also be observed, testifying to the various eras that shaped this sacred space. The integration of the dolmen is visible through a barrel arch that connects the temple to the megalithic chamber, underscoring its particularity.
