The monument stands in Largo da Ferraria, the heart of Abrantes' historic centre. The square, with its wide layout and cobblestone paving, is surrounded by administrative buildings and traditional houses, creating a harmonious setting around the monument.
From this point, one can see part of the houses descending towards the Tagus valley, hear the bells of the neighbouring Igreja de São Vicente, and feel the tranquil atmosphere of a predominantly pedestrian zone.
Inaugurated in 1942, the monument commemorates the national celebrations of a double centenary: eight centuries since the founding of Portugal (1140) and three centuries since the Restoration (1640). It also includes the date 1148, the conquest of Abrantes by D. Afonso Henriques, and 1940, referring to the official year of the commemorations.
The project, authored by architect João António de Aguiar, was initially located in the former Praça Raimundo José Soares Mendes. In 1995, it was moved to its current location, maintaining its function as a commemorative landmark of municipal autonomy and national identity.
The ensemble features a quadrangular stone base, upon which rises a simple column topped by an armillary sphere. Each face displays in relief one of the four commemorative dates, allowing for easy reading from the public space.
The armillary sphere evokes navigation and overseas expansion, while the verticality of the column suggests firmness and historical continuity. The formal sobriety reflects the monumental aesthetic adopted by the Estado Novo for public works of the time.
The square has trees providing pleasant shade and stone benches ideal for a break. Car traffic is limited, fostering a quiet environment where the monument stands out as a point of reference.
Thanks to the slight elevation of the ground, the monument offers interesting photographic framing, especially when aligned with the neighbouring bell towers and the wide horizon over the Middle Tagus.
