The Church of Arcos is located in the town of Arcos, integrated into the union of parishes of Rio Mau and Arcos, in the municipality of Vila do Conde. Situated in a predominantly rural and serene area, its position within the local urban fabric offers a peaceful perspective on the life of this community. It is a central and easily recognizable landmark for those exploring the area.
The history of the Church of Arcos is deeply intertwined with the local community, with references to the parish of São Miguel de Arcos dating back to the 11th century (between 1078 and 1091). This antiquity places its origin in the medieval period, demonstrating a continuous and significant religious presence in this region over many centuries. Although the building observed today is more recent, the parish that preceded it boasts remarkable longevity, being mentioned in important parochial records of the time.
The building of the Church of Arcos that stands today is the result of a more modern construction, dating from the mid-19th century. Its main construction dates back to a period when religiosity and local identity were celebrated through new structures. This temple, dedicated to São Miguel, serves as the spiritual heart of the Arcos community, being a place of gathering and worship that reflects the faith and tradition of its inhabitants.
