Tait House - Numismatic Cabinet

Category: Culture and Entertainment > Museum

District: Porto > Porto > Porto > Massarelos

Location

Situated in Massarelos, in the western area of Porto, Casa Tait rises in a green and tranquil space, sheltered by high walls and surrounded by manicured gardens. The property occupies a hillside with a wide view over the Douro River, which grants it a serene atmosphere and a direct connection to the city's natural landscape. Its location, between the urban housing and the riverbanks, creates a harmonious transition between the urban space and the countryside.

Access is via a narrow and discreet street, which reinforces the feeling of refuge. The surroundings are marked by ancient trees, flowerbeds, and dense vegetation that conveys an atmosphere of withdrawal and calm, far from the bustle of downtown Porto.

Origin and History

The current Casa Tait originates from the old Quinta do Meio, one of the several pleasure estates that occupied this area of Massarelos since the 17th century. The name it currently bears is due to William Tait (1844–1925), a Port wine merchant and British naturalist, who acquired the property in 1900, although he had already been living there since 1880. Before his arrival, the space hosted a college run by the Reverend Edward Whitely.

William Tait dedicated a large part of his life to the study of fauna and flora, even publishing the work The Birds of Portugal in 1924. His connection to the naturalist Charles Darwin is attested by correspondence exchanged between them. After his death, the house remained in the family until 1978, when Muriel Tait, his descendant, bequeathed it to the Porto City Council with the wish that the space become a public garden, open to the city.

Architecture and Ambiance

The building features a simple and balanced architecture, with a facade covered in ivy and a gable roof, integrating naturally into the green surroundings. The windows facing the river reinforce the house's relationship with the Douro landscape. The ensemble conveys a sense of discreet elegance, typical of the old British country residences that marked this area of Porto in the 19th century.

In the gardens, geometric layouts, small boxwood paths, and shady nooks under centennial trees stand out. The presence of sculptures and stone elements adds a romantic touch to the ambiance. The place still maintains a character of retreat and contemplation today, preserving the memory of its past as a private estate.

Gardens and Natural Heritage

The gardens of Casa Tait are renowned for their diversity and botanical value. Among the most notable species is the tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), over 250 years old, classified as a tree of public interest since 1950. The space also brings together a remarkable collection of about sixty camellia specimens, a rose garden on the terrace overlooking the Douro, and a Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora), also classified.

The garden’s atmosphere reflects William Tait's taste for botany and nature observation. The harmonious arrangement of plants, the balance between open and shaded areas, and the discreet sound of birds create an ideal setting for quiet walks and moments of rest in contact with greenery.

Current Function

Today belonging to the Porto City Council, Casa Tait is part of the City Museum and hosts cultural and artistic activities, such as temporary exhibitions and creative residencies. It maintains Muriel Tait's original purpose: to be a space where nature, culture, and tranquility meet. The rehabilitation of the building and the conservation of the gardens ensure the continuity of this legacy, offering the city a place where past and present coexist in harmony.
