The Veiros Special Protection Area (ZPE Veiros) is located in the town of Veiros, which is part of the municipality of Monforte. This area is situated within the vast and characteristic landscape of Alto Alentejo, known for its extensive open fields and wide horizons.
The surrounding environment is distinctly rural, sometimes dotted with cork and holm oak groves. This scenery offers a remarkable sense of tranquility and vastness, inviting contemplation of nature and the silence that characterizes the Alentejo plains.
The ZPE Veiros was established as a fundamental conservation area, integrated into the Natura 2000 Network, a cornerstone of environmental protection in Europe. The primary purpose of this classification is to safeguard a particular ecosystem and the species that inhabit it.
This territory is crucial for the preservation of steppe birds, species that depend exclusively on open field habitats for their life cycle. The ZPE Veiros constitutes an essential refuge, providing ideal conditions for these birds to nest, feed, and reproduce, underscoring the region's unique ecological value.
For those interested in nature and birdlife, the ZPE Veiros provides a unique environment for observation. The vast expanse of the site and the unobstructed landscape facilitate the sighting of various bird species in their natural context.
A visit to this area allows one to witness the richness of local biodiversity and understand the importance of preserving these ecosystems. The quietness of the environment and the sounds of wildlife contribute to an experience of contemplation and a deep connection with the Alentejo landscape.
