The Monforte Special Protection Zone (SPZ) is located in the municipality of Monforte, near the locality of Vaiamonte, in Upper Alentejo. This vast natural area, covering approximately 1887 hectares, also extends into the neighboring municipality of Fronteira. It is characterized by a typical Alentejo landscape, with wide horizons and a tranquil environment, situated in a region where the countryside predominates and human intervention is, for the most part, harmonious with the surrounding nature.
The Monforte SPZ reveals a mosaic of landscapes that reflect the traditional land use in the region. Extensive pastures and cereal cultivation areas predominate. Occasionally, small, more traditional olive groves appear, along with scattered patches of holm oak montado, with the undergrowth occupied by pastures and cereal crops. This diverse environment creates a scene of great natural beauty, where vastness and the feeling of freedom are striking elements for those who explore the area.
Designated as a Special Protection Zone, this area's main objective is the conservation of important bird species. It is a vital refuge, particularly for steppe birds, which find a suitable nesting habitat here. Among the species of greatest conservation interest that inhabit the Monforte SPZ are the great bustard (Otis tarda) and the little bustard (Tetrax tetrax). In addition to these, it is possible to observe other birds of prey and field birds, such as the red kite (Milvus milvus), the Montagu's harrier (Circus pygargus), the black-winged kite (Elanus caeruleus), and the calandra lark, making the site of particular relevance for those who appreciate wildlife observation.
