Location

The Water Mill is located in the village of Barroqueira, in the municipality of Ponte de Sor, more specifically in the area that gives it its name, "Moinho de Água" (Water Mill). This site is situated in a serene and predominantly natural setting, characterized by its proximity to the Ribeira de Sor. Its position offers a tranquil environment, typical of the Alentejo's riverside landscapes, inviting nature observation and the enjoyment of calm.

Historical Legacy

This Water Mill is a testament to the historical importance of milling in the region, an activity that shaped the landscape and the lives of communities from the Middle Ages until the mid-20th century. The mill, powered by the force of the river's water, was essential for transforming cereals into flour, playing a central role in the economy and daily life. Although time has left its mark, vestiges of the structure can still be observed, allowing a journey into the past and an understanding of how these traditional engines worked. Its presence recalls times when life depended directly on the rhythm of the waters.

Natural Environment

The area surrounding the Water Mill is a point of interest for nature lovers. The Ribeira de Sor, which fed the mill, is the central element of this lush green landscape. Next to the old weir, indispensable for the water to reach the necessary force to move the millstones, there is now a place of biodiversity. It is possible to observe various species of birds that inhabit the area, as well as fish in the waterways. With some luck, one might even spot an otter, a discreet inhabitant of these riparian ecosystems. This natural setting invites a relaxing stroll and contemplation of the local flora and fauna.
