The Funchal-Monte Cable Car has its starting point in a central and historic area of the city of Funchal, specifically in the area known as Arsenal, near the Admiral Reis Garden. From here, the ascent begins towards Monte, a locality situated on the heights of the city. This strategic position allows the journey to unfold over the urban landscape of Funchal, offering a unique perspective on the houses, gardens, and the port, before delving into the vegetation of the hillside, culminating its arrival in the Monte area.
Throughout the entire route, passengers are treated to extensive views of Funchal, the Atlantic, and the mountains that embrace the city, making the location a central element of the experience.
The construction of the Funchal-Monte Cable Car, which began in September 1999 and was inaugurated in November 2000, marks a chapter in the history of Madeira's tourist transport. This modern infrastructure emerged with the purpose of reviving the role that the historic Monte Train once held. This steam train, which operated between 1887 and 1943, connected the city center to Monte, being an emblematic means of transport and leisure for the time. The cable car, by resuming this connection, continues a tradition of linking Funchal's center to one of its highest points, offering a new way to experience the route that once fascinated visitors.
The journey on the Funchal-Monte Cable Car is an experience that unfolds in the air, providing a gradual aerial perspective of Madeira's capital. Over approximately 15 minutes, the cabins climb a height difference of about 560 meters, allowing passengers to observe the city expanding below. The views revealed during the trip are panoramic, encompassing the colorful houses of Funchal, the blue of the ocean stretching towards the horizon, and the mountains that frame the landscape. This aerial route is an invitation to contemplate the natural and urban beauty of the region, revealing itself as a privileged observation point for the island's contours.
The Funchal-Monte Cable Car is an engineering structure that integrates into the landscape, both natural and urban. The main steel cable extends for over three kilometers, supported by a series of strategically positioned metal towers. Some of these towers are directly integrated into the urban fabric, testifying to how the infrastructure has adapted to the built environment. The cabins, which transport passengers, glide smoothly, offering a tranquil ascent experience. This modern system not only provides an efficient means of transport but also stands out as a distinctive visual element that crosses Funchal, connecting different altitudes and landscapes.
