The Monte Cable Car is located in the Monte area, an elevated part of Funchal. This mode of transport connects the lower part of the city, specifically the Old Town, with the picturesque Monte area. Its strategic position allows visitors a distinct perspective of the urban landscape, which stretches along the hillsides to meet the vast Atlantic Ocean.
The journey on the Monte Cable Car provides a unique experience. For about fifteen minutes, visitors ascend a gradient of approximately 560 meters, covering a total distance of 3200 meters over the valley. The route offers wide and unobstructed views of the Funchal bay and the houses scattered along the slope. The cabins allow for a calm observation of the panorama as the perspective changes during the ascent or descent.
The Monte Cable Car is not just a modern infrastructure; it continues a tradition of connection between Funchal and Monte. In the past, in the 20th century, this route was traveled by the famous Monte Railway, a steam train that operated between 1887 and 1943. The cable car, inaugurated in 2000, revives the idea of facilitating access to this higher area, but now in a contemporary way and with an unparalleled aerial view, witnessing the evolution of transport on the island.
