The João Carlos Abreu Universe of Memories is located in Achada, an area of São Pedro, in the municipality of Funchal. Occupying an elegant historic building on Calçada do Pico, it is situated in an area that offers a perspective on the urban surroundings, within walking distance of the city centre. Its elevated position contributes to the unique atmosphere of the place.
The core of this cultural space is the vast collection of objects and memories donated by João Carlos Abreu to the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Recognized as a journalist, writer, and influential figure in cultural and tourism management, his collection reflects the countless travels and deep connections he established over four decades dedicated to tourism. This unique collection comprises a diversity of decorative arts, originating from various continents, totaling approximately ten thousand pieces, which include books, ceramics, paintings, and artisanal art.
A visit to the Universe of Memories unfolds through various thematic spaces, each revealing a distinct facet of the collector and his passions. It is possible to explore rooms such as the Library, the Dining Room, and the Travel Room, where each carefully selected object narrates a story. Notable divisions include the Horse Room, a testament to his fascination with these animals, and the Tie Room, which displays one of his most remarkable collections. The collection also includes elements that evoke João Carlos Abreu's personal connection to the iconic fado singer Amália Rodrigues, through photographs, correspondence, and some of her striking dresses.
The villa that houses the Universe of Memories was built at the end of the 19th century as a residential property. Over the years, the property belonged to different Madeiran families, with records of its existence dating back to 1888. After a period as a private residence, the Regional Government of Madeira acquired the building in the early 2000s. It was then carefully rehabilitated to house João Carlos Abreu's valuable collection, a process that involved his active participation in adapting the spaces. This transformation allowed for the preservation of the building's original architecture while simultaneously giving it a new public and cultural purpose.
