Quinta das Palmeiras is located on the island of Porto Santo, within the area of Vila Baleira. This space is situated in an area that, by nature, presents a drier and more arid environment.
Its position in the landscape gives it a remarkable characteristic: it stands out as a vibrant green spot, offering a refreshing contrast to its surroundings. It is an accessible location within the island's structure.
This peculiar garden is the result of a singular project. It was conceived and developed by Carlos Afonso over fifteen years of dedicated work. Creating an exuberant green space on dry land required considerable effort, including the transportation of water by tanker trucks to nourish the plants.
Quinta das Palmeiras opened its doors to the public in 1993. Its history of transformation can be observed through a photographic exhibition that documents the site's evolution since its conception.
Upon visiting Quinta das Palmeiras, visitors will find a blend of a small-scale botanical garden and a space with mini-zoo elements. Walking through its paths allows for the discovery of a variety of plant species that provide shade and color, such as palm trees, hibiscus, and roses.
In addition to the flora, the site houses a diversity of animal life, especially birds. It is possible to observe different species, such as parrots, and many others that move freely around the grounds. The space also features aquatic areas inhabited by swans, turtles, and fish, complementing the experience of contact with nature.
