The Fort of São José is located in the town of Vila Baleira, integrated into the area known as Matas, in the municipality of Porto Santo. Its position, close to the area that historically served as an anchorage on the island, reflects its original function of defending the coast and the point of arrival by sea.
Built to protect the town's anchorage and its population from possible attacks, the Fort of São José dates back to the Pombaline period, standing out as one of the island's historical defensive elements. Over the centuries, its original function evolved, and the building adapted to different needs. It served, for example, as the governor's residence, housed military troops, and even functioned as a prison.
The Fort underwent significant alterations over time, witnessing various phases of Porto Santo's life and history, from its initial military role to becoming a property with other uses.
Currently, the Fort of São José retains some elements that evoke its past. One of the notable aspects is its main portal. On this portal, carved in local stonework, the Portuguese royal coat of arms can be observed. These arms feature an oval shape, a closed crown, and are surmounted by the cross of Christ, also including seven towers in the border and bearing the date of 1820.
Outside the Fort, some old artillery pieces are displayed. These cast-iron cannons, believed to have originated from British galleons, are remnants of the military equipment that once ensured the island's defense and contribute to the historical atmosphere of the site.
Considering its significance in the island's history and military architecture, the Fort of São José was the subject of a proposal to be classified as a Property of Public Interest. This recognition underlines the Fort's importance as an integral part of Porto Santo's built cultural heritage.
