The Old Bridge of Faial is located in the Covas area, in the village of Faial, which belongs to the municipality of Santana, on the island of Madeira. This historic structure spans the bed of the Faial Stream, which once carried a considerable flow of water, but today is mostly dry. The bridge serves as a link between the two banks of the stream.
Situated in a peri-urban environment, yet with a certain isolation that invites tranquility, the bridge is close to the ER 101 road. Its surroundings are marked by steep and rocky slopes, characteristic of the Madeiran landscape, offering an interesting perspective on the local topography.
Inaugurated in 1904, the Old Bridge of Faial was, for many years, the longest bridge on the island of Madeira, reaching a length of approximately one hundred and thirty meters. It was popularly known as "Ponte das Sete Bocas" (Bridge of the Seven Mouths), a name that referred to its seven original arches, built in basalt masonry.
This early 20th-century engineering marvel played a crucial role in local communications, connecting the two banks of the parish and facilitating mobility and regional development. Its perfect semicircular arches, with wide voussoirs and a robust basalt structure, are an example of the construction of the era, designed to withstand time and the elements.
The history of the Old Bridge of Faial was profoundly altered by a violent storm in 1984, which caused the collapse of a significant part of its structure. Today, of its seven original arches, only three remain standing, solidly implanted, and the beginning of a fourth arch, which serves as a memory of its initial splendor.
Despite its current condition, the bridge maintains its imposing presence, serving as a historical and cultural landmark. The remaining structure, with its asphalted deck and concrete railings, tells the story of a work that defied time and the forces of nature, remaining a symbol of local resilience.
The Old Bridge of Faial, in its current form, offers a captivating setting for those seeking a moment of contemplation and landscape appreciation. The basalt masonry arches, framed by vegetation and rocky slopes, create a picturesque image of great natural beauty.
This location invites a pause to observe the stream valley and its surroundings. It is an interesting spot for those engaged in photography or simply wishing to absorb the tranquil atmosphere of Faial, connecting its historical legacy with the serenity of the Madeiran landscape.
