This manor is located in Lombada, an area of Ponta do Sol. Erected on top of a slope, it is situated in a predominantly agricultural landscape, where houses are sparsely distributed. Its size and the color of its facade make it a prominent landmark in this rural environment. The main facade faces an old municipal road, marking its presence in the area.
The history of Solar dos Esmeraldos dates back to the late 15th century. It was commissioned by João Esmeraldo, a wealthy Flemish merchant who settled in Madeira. Connected to the flourishing sugar cane cycle, which dominated the island's economy at that time, João Esmeraldo acquired vast properties in Lombada for sugar cultivation and production, with this manor serving as the family residence linked to that activity.
Over the centuries, the building underwent alterations and improvements, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries, but despite this, it retained characteristics of its original style. Since the 1930s, the manor has been the property of the Portuguese State and currently houses an educational institution.
This historic building displays the typical architecture of Madeiran noble houses. Several rectangular volumes compose the structure, which adapts to the uneven terrain, with a central tower standing out. The roofs, with different pitches, are covered with traditional barrel tiles.
On the main facade, an arched stone portal draws attention, topped by the stone coat of arms of the Esmeraldo family. Details such as windows of different shapes and balconies with wrought iron railings contribute to the manor's unique identity. It is possible to glimpse inner courtyards with paved floors, elements that evoke life from bygone eras.
Solar dos Esmeraldos was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1977. This status recognizes its historical and architectural importance as a testament to the golden age of sugar in Madeira and the power of the families linked to this crop.
Even though it currently serves a different function, the manor maintains its relevance as one of the most significant historic buildings in Ponta do Sol, preserving the memory of a crucial period in the island's history.
