The Solar dos Esmeraldos is located in Ponta do Sol, in the locality of Lombada, nestled on the hillside. Its elevated position gives it a notable presence in the landscape, dominating the surrounding agricultural area. Its main facade, which stands out for its old pink color, borders the municipal road, making the building easily identifiable and a landmark in the region.

A Historic Legacy:

This imposing manor house has its roots in the 15th century, dating back to 1494. Its construction was driven by João Esmeraldo, a wealthy Flemish merchant who played a crucial role in the development of Madeira Island. It was he who leased the vast lands of Lombada, dedicating them to the cultivation of sugarcane, a crop of great economic importance at the time. The presence of the manor is a testament to the wealth and importance of sugar production in Ponta do Sol in the early days of its colonization.

Architecture and Heritage:

The Solar dos Esmeraldos exhibits architecture characteristic of a Madeiran noble house, with a rectangular plan that adapts harmoniously to the slope of the land. It is composed of several interconnected sections and visually stands out for its volume and the inclusion of a central tower, which gives it a distinct profile. Although it has undergone various improvement works over the centuries, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries, the building has managed to preserve its original style. Its historical and architectural relevance is officially recognized, being classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (Building of Public Interest) since 1977, ensuring the safeguarding of this unique heritage.
