The Palheiro Gardens are situated on an elevation to the east of Funchal, in the locality of Palheiro Ferreiro, within the municipality of Funchal. Its privileged position, at approximately 500 meters above sea level, provides a panoramic view of Madeira's capital city.
This extensive green space is part of one of the island's largest and most notable estates, highlighting the grandeur of the surrounding landscape.
The history of the Palheiro Gardens is rooted in the early 19th century, the period when the property was established. Its first owner, the Count of Carvalhal, played a crucial role in introducing various tree species and developing a vast collection of camellias, which to this day constitutes one of the garden's highlights.
Later, in 1885, the estate was acquired by the Blandy family. This change of ownership led to the alternative designation by which the gardens are sometimes known: "Blandy Gardens," consolidating their identity and perpetuating their botanical heritage.
The Palheiro Gardens are recognized for their botanical richness and the landscapes that unfold across their approximately 143,200 m². Within them, trees with approximately two centuries of existence stand out, lending a unique atmosphere and a timeless character to the space.
In addition to the diverse vegetation, the garden features expansive lawns and several lakes. The architectural heritage is also notable with the presence of a Baroque-style chapel and a house dating back to the 18th century, elements that harmonize with the natural surroundings, offering additional points of interest for the visitor's journey.
