The Lime Route Museum Centre is located in the peaceful area of Laranjal, in São Vicente, on the north coast of Madeira Island. Situated in Sítio dos Lameiros, the site is surrounded by a Madeiran rural landscape, characterised by its greenery and traditional agricultural elements. This natural setting offers a tranquil and authentic scenery, transporting visitors to an environment where time seems to slow down, away from the hustle and bustle, and where the connection to the land and its ancestral practices is palpable.
This museum centre offers a perspective on the ancient process of lime extraction and production, fundamental for construction and agriculture in Madeira. The journey through the space allows visitors to observe the limestone quarries from which the material was extracted and a lime kiln, where the stones were fired. The visit reveals the techniques and effort involved, recreating the route that, in other times, was taken by workers to transport firewood, limestone, and water, essential for the kiln's operation. It is an opportunity to understand the importance of this industry in the daily life of the island.
Besides its industrial aspect, the Lime Route Museum Centre also reveals aspects of the region's natural and cultural heritage. Inside the museum, it is possible to deepen one's knowledge about the entire lime cycle through an audiovisual support that details each stage, from extraction to the various uses of the final product. Visitors can also observe fossilised remains over five million years old, which tell the geological history of the island. The space also integrates other support buildings for production, such as haylofts and levadas, elements that highlight the resilience and ingenuity of local communities in adapting and thriving on the Madeiran terrain.
