Located in the heart of Machico village, in the area known as Misericórdia, the Fort of Nossa Senhora do Amparo holds a central and easily accessible position. It is close to the seafront, integrated into an urban environment that includes streets and landscaped areas. Its structure stands out in the local landscape, serving as a landmark.
This fort dates back to the early 18th century, having been built in 1706. Its construction had a clear purpose: to reinforce Machico's coastal defenses against the frequent attacks by pirates and privateers at the time. The initiative came from Captain Francisco Dias Franco, who served as a clerk for Machico's City Council at the time.
Throughout history, the Fort of Nossa Senhora do Amparo adapted to different uses. Due to its notable importance as an example of military architecture and its patrimonial relevance, it is today classified as a Property of Public Interest.
The fort's architecture is characterized by its triangular plan, a strategic form for defense. One point of this structure faces directly towards the sea, while the side facing land houses the main entrance.
The walls feature a talus finish, meaning a sloped base that increases their robustness. At the top, they are topped by merlons with a projecting cordon, typical elements of fortifications of the era, crafted from local stonework. The entrance, made of hard stonework, displays a portal with a perfect arch, above which is a commemorative plaque of the fort's foundation, surmounted by the national coat of arms.
Upon entering the fort, one accesses a central courtyard, designated as a terreplein. This space offers an inviting atmosphere, combining landscaped areas with traditional rolled pebble paving. Here, it is possible to observe various pieces of old artillery, some originating from other parts of the island, which recall the fort's original function.
