The Monte Palace Madeira Museum is located in the Desterro area, in the parish of Monte, Funchal. Its location is characterized by an elevated position, providing a unique setting with unobstructed views over Funchal Bay. The museum is integrated into the vast and lush Monte Palace Tropical Garden, offering visitors an experience that combines cultural heritage with the natural beauty of the surrounding environment.
This museum space stands out for housing a collection of significant value, inviting visitors on a journey through different cultures and geographies. The museum is presented in various galleries, each dedicated to a distinct theme, allowing for the exploration of artistic and natural narratives from different parts of the world. The central purpose is to awaken curiosity and enrich knowledge, complementing the experience provided by the outdoor environment.
One of the prominent collections is entitled "African Passion", showcasing a vast display of contemporary stone sculpture, originating from Zimbabwe. This collection includes over a thousand works, created between 1966 and 1969, and is distributed across two galleries. In one, the pieces are presented individually, valuing each artist's expression. In the other gallery, an attempt is made to recreate the environment and context in which these sculptures were originally created and exhibited, providing a more immersive perspective on this form of African art.
The museum's other prominent collection is "Secrets of Mother Nature", which features hundreds of mineral samples. Originating from various global locations, notably Brazil, Portugal, South Africa, Zambia, Peru, Argentina, and North America, there are approximately seven hundred pieces on display. These minerals are arranged in creative ways, some in cavities that simulate their natural formation environment, and others "suspended", evoking a sense of planetary space. It also includes a gallery dedicated to the exhibition of gems, with special attention to diamonds.
The Monte Palace Madeira Museum was designed with its visitors in mind, aiming to be a place of easy access and comfort. To ensure that the journey through its galleries is a pleasant experience for everyone, the space features access ramps and adapted sanitary facilities. This attention to detail contributes to a welcoming and inclusive environment, where cultural discovery and artistic appreciation can be enjoyed without impediment.
