The Monte Palace Museum is located in the Monte area, in Funchal. It is set within the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, in an elevated position that allows visitors to observe the city's bay from this point, offering sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.
Inside the Monte Palace Museum, one can find several valuable collections that offer a journey through different artistic expressions and natural riches from around the world. Two of the main permanent collections are dedicated to contemporary African art and the fascinating diversity of the mineral kingdom.
One of the main exhibitions, titled African Passion, brings together a significant collection of contemporary sculpture from Zimbabwe. With over a thousand works that illustrate a vast period of contemporary Zimbabwean sculpture, featuring significant pieces created since 1966, this collection is displayed across two galleries. Each gallery offers distinct perspectives: one focuses on the artists individually, while the other attempts to recreate the original context in which these pieces were created.
The Mother Nature's Secrets collection showcases hundreds of mineral samples, around seven hundred, from various parts of the world, including countries like Brazil, Portugal, South Africa, Zambia, or Peru. The way they are displayed attempts to evoke the natural environment of their formation or create the sensation of being suspended in space. The museum also features an area dedicated to the exhibition of gems, where one can observe some outstanding pieces for their beauty and rarity.
The museum strives to ensure accessible conditions for all visitors. To facilitate movement, access ramps are available, complemented by adapted restroom facilities.
