The Madeira Toy Museum is located in the city of Funchal, situated in the area known as Zona Velha. It occupies a historic building, an integral part of the Armazém do Mercado (Market Warehouse) complex, whose origins date back to the 18th century. It is located on the second floor of this historic property.
This museum originated from a private collection that was enriched over time with pieces from other collectors. It gathers a vast collection, with approximately 20,000 toys in total. This collection includes dolls, toy soldiers, miniature cars, games, and action figures, originating from Portugal, England, France, Germany, among other countries.
The exhibited objects cover an extended period, from the late 19th century to the present day. Visiting this museum allows for a journey through time and generations. It is an opportunity to rediscover toys that marked different eras and evoke childhood memories for many visitors. The exhibition shows how toys have evolved, reflecting changes in materials, design, and tastes over more than a century of history. It is an interesting space for people of all ages, who can find familiar pieces or discover how people used to play in other times.
