Located in Calheta, on the west coast of Madeira Island, the museum is situated in the area known as Estrela. Its setting offers unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean. The building was designed to dialogue with the surrounding landscape, taking advantage of its location.
The structure housing the museum is the work of Madeiran architect Paulo David. Characterized by its modern lines and remarkable integration into the landscape, the architectural project has received international recognition. The way the building is set into the terrain is one of the distinctive aspects of the visit.
The museum's collection focuses on Portuguese contemporary art. Its origin dates back to the 1960s, with works acquired through the "Prémios Cidade do Funchal" (Funchal City Awards). The collection grew significantly throughout the 1990s and is now regarded as a relevant body of work for national artistic production. It includes works by artists who marked different periods of Portuguese art.
With a vast collection of works, the museum offers insight into the diversity of contemporary artistic creation in Portugal, showcasing different movements and artists.
The relocation of the collection to the current facilities, which occurred in 2015, significantly increased the space available for exhibition and storage of works. In addition to the galleries, the building features an auditorium, a documentation center for consultation, and a shop. These areas complement the visitor experience and allow the museum to function as a dynamic cultural center, hosting various events and activities.
The space was designed to be accessible to all visitors, featuring elevators and ramps to facilitate circulation throughout the different areas of the building.
