The Fanal Lagoon is situated in the municipality of Porto Moniz, in the locality of Ribeira da Janela, on the magnificent island of Madeira. It is immersed in a natural landscape of great value, an integral part of the Laurissilva forest, an ancient ecosystem classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Its setting is dominated by luxuriant vegetation and centuries-old trees that characterize this humid subtropical forest, providing an immersive scenery and a deep connection with the island's virgin nature.
One of the most notable aspects of the Fanal Lagoon is its non-permanent nature. Unlike other bodies of water, this lagoon only appears under certain conditions, forming predominantly during the winter months or after periods of intense rain.
When it manifests, the lagoon transforms the landscape, creating a water mirror that reflects the canopies of ancestral trees, such as the til and barbusano, often shrouded in an ethereal mist. This atmosphere lends the place a unique charm and an air of mystery, inviting contemplation and the enjoyment of the tranquility that emanates from this natural corner of Madeira.
