In the heart of Funchal city, surrounded by some of its main arteries, lies this garden, serving as a green refuge in the midst of an urban area. It is located in the Sé area, providing an accessible space of tranquility for those traversing the city center.
Its central location makes it an easily accessible spot and a serene contrast to the surrounding city's bustle, offering a place for a break or a peaceful stroll.
The history of this space dates back several centuries, occupying the land where the Convent of São Francisco once stood. Although the convent building is no longer present, a marble coat of arms, dating from the 17th century, remains as a testament to that past, displaying the symbols of the religious order and the kingdom.
The creation of the garden as we know it today began in 1880. Over time, the space had different names, having been known, for example, as Jardim Dona Amélia in homage to the last queen of Portugal, before regaining its current designation.
The garden is notable for its rich collection of plants. It features a wide range of botanical species, including many characteristic of Madeira Island's native flora, as well as specimens from various parts of the world, especially tropical and subtropical regions.
This diversity creates a visually interesting and constantly changing environment throughout the seasons. To enrich the visit, some of the most emblematic species are identified, allowing visitors to learn more about the origin and characteristics of the plants present.
With a generous area, the garden offers various nooks designed for the enjoyment of its visitors. It includes a pond adorned with fountains, inhabited by fish, ducks, and swans, which constitutes a scenic point within the green space.
The pathways meander among diverse flowerbeds, marked by the traditional paving of small rolled pebbles, characteristic of Madeiran gardens. There is also a small amphitheater, which occasionally hosts cultural initiatives and events, bringing dynamism to this public space.
