The Santa Luzia Garden is located in the central area of Funchal, within the area known as Quinta do Salvador. Surrounded by urban thoroughfares such as Rua do Til and Rua 31 de Janeiro, its strategic location allows it to serve as a tranquil refuge in the heart of the city. One of its distinctive features, the old sugar mill chimney, is visible from various points in Funchal, serving as a historical landmark in the urban landscape.

A Historical Root

Inaugurated in 2004, the Santa Luzia Garden occupies the land that once belonged to the old Hinton sugar mill, also known as Fábrica do Torreão. This green space was designed with the purpose of keeping alive the memory of its former industrial function, integrating vestiges of that past into its design. As a testament to that era, some of the original cogwheels and the imposing brick chimney are preserved, elements that recall the strong presence of the sugar industry in Madeira's history.

A Botanical Mosaic

With an area of 13,600 square meters, the Santa Luzia Garden is an example of landscape planning, distinguished with an honorable mention in the National Landscape Architecture Award. The space is organized into five distinct thematic areas, each celebrating an aspect of the island's natural and cultural richness. The Laurissilva Garden features endemic species from Madeira's native forest, such as the til and the laurel. The Terraced Garden reflects the typical agricultural landscape of the region, while the Water Garden incorporates elements of the levadas. The Tropical Garden displays a collection of exotic plants, including the jacaranda. Finally, the Amphitheater Garden offers a space with different configurations and vegetation, creating a varied and interesting route for visitors.
