The Quinta das Cruzes Garden is located in the city of Funchal, in the area known as Achada, belonging to the parish of São Pedro. Its elevated position, in the historic heart of the city, places it between landmarks such as the Convent of Santa Clara and the Pico Fortress. From one of its viewpoints, it is possible to enjoy a broad and captivating view over the bay of Funchal.
This garden is part of the historic Quinta das Cruzes, a place with deep roots in Madeira's history. It is believed that the quinta was one of the first residences of João Gonçalves Zarco, the navigator who discovered the island. Over the centuries, the property was enriched and adapted, today presenting architectural vestiges that tell its long history. Among them, two notable Manueline-style windows stand out, carved in basalt and dating from the 16th century, some of which come from old city buildings.
Within the garden grounds, you will find the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, built in 1692. Inside, it is possible to observe an altarpiece worked in regional stonework, a painting attributed to Bento Coelho da Silveira, and a 18th-century terracotta nativity scene. The space also preserves an archaeological nucleus with findings such as part of the primitive pillory of Funchal, tombstones, including one associated with Henrique Alemão, one of the first settlers, and the old coat of arms of the city, elements that invite reflection on the past.
Of romantic inspiration, the Quinta das Cruzes Garden is an authentic green refuge, offering close contact with Madeiran flora. Here, visitors can discover a vast and diverse collection of plants, including both endemic species of the island and exotic specimens, carefully integrated into the landscape. One of the most prominent features is the orchidarium, known for its beauty and the vibrant variety of orchids it houses. In addition to flowers, the garden is adorned by large, centuries-old trees, providing shade and an atmosphere of coolness and tranquility.
The paths of the Quinta das Cruzes Garden, paved with rolled pebbles and small stones, invite a peaceful and contemplative stroll. Its layout, sometimes asymmetrical between lawns and shrubs, and in other areas with more geometric flowerbeds, creates a varied visual experience. Small lakes and old fountains punctuate the route, adding a special charm to the ambiance. The harmony between historical architecture and natural richness makes this garden a suitable place for relaxation and appreciation of beauty, culminating in the aforementioned panoramic view of the bay of Funchal, a setting that complements the visit.
