Jardim da Madalena is located in the Penteada area, in the locality of Funchal. This urban green space is situated on the right bank of the Ribeira de São João, in an area characterized by its tranquility and integration into local life. A notable feature of its surroundings is the presence of a pedestrian bridge, which facilitates connection and access to different points in the vicinity.
Inaugurated in November 2017, Jardim da Madalena presents itself as a space designed with a contemporary approach to leisure and well-being. It is an enclosed area, but with free access, conceived for easy pedestrian circulation without architectural barriers. Here, visitors find various options to enjoy the outdoors, from a play and recreation area dedicated to the younger ones, to exercise equipment that functions as an open-air gym, promoting activity through a maintenance circuit system.
The garden's green structure is dominated by a large lawn area, inviting rest and contemplation. The botanical composition reveals a careful selection of species, including subtropical trees such as the majestic jacarandas, the colorful tipuanas, and the scarlet acacias, which promise to offer shade and a spectacle of colors along the internal paths. One of the central themes is the presence of variegated foliage plants, with emphasis on white and dark red colors. There is also a collection of mallows that enriches one of the garden's secondary avenues.
The care for the flora extends to the preservation and integration of native species from Madeira. It is possible to observe specimens such as the barbusano, the bay laurel, the island beech, and the imposing dragon tree, planted in areas aimed at greater future naturalization. Additionally, native shrubs such as the Portuguese laurel and the Madeira viper's bugloss contribute to the stabilization of the slopes and the diversity of the landscape.
In addition to its natural and recreational components, Jardim da Madalena incorporates elements of urban art that give it a distinctive character. Visitors can admire a bust dedicated to Dr. William Clode, a tribute sculpted by Anselmo Costa Júnior. Another point of visual interest is a large-sized Coca-Cola bottle, which has been artistically decorated by the visual artist Miguel Caeiro, known as RAM, adding a touch of creativity to the environment.
